BURST 26
Burst 26 is a temporary public art installation created for the new pollinator garden at the foot of University Avenue in downtown Toronto. Commissioned by the Toronto Downtown West BIA to coincide with the FIFA World Cup 2026, the work celebrates both the global spirit of football and the ecological systems that shape our city.
The installation draws inspiration from the geometric form of the iconic Telstar football, whose distinctive pattern of pentagons and hexagons became synonymous with nine consecutive World Cup tournaments between 1970 and 2002. Yet this familiar geometry resonates on a deeper level. The form also evokes the bursting seedhead of a wildflower, a powerful natural image of energy held in suspension before dispersal and renewal.
Positioned within a pollinator garden, Burst 26 explores the parallels between the movement of seeds through ecological networks and the movement of people, cultures, and ideas across the globe. It connects the spectacle of international sport with the organic patterns of growth, migration, exchange, and regeneration found in nature.
The work reflects Toronto itself: diverse, dynamic, and continually reshaped by the circulation of people and stories. Like seeds carried on the wind, the installation suggests possibility, connection, and the unexpected outcomes that emerge when different worlds intersect.
Conceived by Fieldwork Design Office and realized in collaboration with artist and fabricator Richard A. Posa, Burst 26 transforms a moment of international attention into an opportunity to celebrate biodiversity, community, and the shared experiences that unite us across borders.
