Hamilton Supportive Housing

Working together with mcCallumSather Architects, we developed a site design for rezoning and to direct future design development with the intention of creating a vital community resource designed to provide short-term residential accommodations, primarily for single mothers with young children. The project emphasizes comfort, safety, and dignity, creating a nurturing environment for families in transition. Located on a tight and challenging urban site, the design carefully balances functionality with a strong commitment to soft landscape and outdoor space.

To foster a sense of refuge, much of the usable landscape is positioned at the rear of the property, away from the busy Barton Street frontage. Despite spatial constraints, the site accommodates tree-lined parking, discreet back-of-house and loading areas, and dedicated entrances for three distinct program spaces, including a daycare facility.

Outdoor spaces are thoughtfully integrated, featuring an exterior childcare area, a private garden court, and a small amenity terrace. The terrace includes playful elements such as a tricycle race track, raised planters that provide enclosure and greenery, and comfortable bench seating for rest and social interaction.

Throughout the site, the pedestrian experience is prioritized, with soft landscaping used to create a calming, welcoming atmosphere. This project stands as a model of compassionate design, offering a safe and supportive environment for women and children in need.
