MARCUS BEACH LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT PLAN

Our team was commissioned by the Marcus Beach Cottage Owners Association to develop a landscape management plan that reconciles the ecological succession of the site with the desire to preserve views of Lake Kashagawigamog. Nearly 20 years ago, a tornado swept through the peninsula, clearing much of the mature forest canopy. The cottages were built shortly after, and owners enjoyed open lake vistas. Over time, however, the landscape began to regenerate, and views were gradually obscured by fast-growing species such as alder and Canada goldenrod—plants encouraged by earlier shoreline stabilization efforts aimed at reducing goose activity.

Our approach was twofold. The short-term plan focused on restoring views while minimizing ecological disruption. We assessed each cottage’s sightlines to establish view “windows,” identifying trees that could be limbed up, saplings that could be transplanted, and areas where alder removal was feasible. This allowed for a mosaic of open and regenerating spaces, tailored to each property.

The long-term plan emphasized ecological resilience. We catalogued all saplings on site and proposed an on-site nursery to relocate those obstructing views. These trees would later be replanted in strategic locations to re-establish a shade canopy—nature’s best tool for suppressing alder and goldenrod. A planting typology was developed to guide future tree placement, ensuring that canopy restoration occurs in a thoughtful, site-specific way.

This plan offers a regenerative framework that respects both the land’s natural trajectory and the lived experience of its residents.
