A Grand Swim

A Grand Swim reimagines the Grand River in downtown Galt as a clean, swimmable, joy‑filled public space—using the simple act of swimming as a catalyst for watershed‑wide restoration. Ontario’s longest river has been a cultural and ecological anchor for generations, yet downtown Galt’s channelized stretch remains burdened by stormwater, runoff and wastewater impacts that make swimming unsafe. This concept proposes a feasible, scalable approach to reversing that reality.

The design deploys a suite of nature‑based systems engineered to improve water quality. Floating remediation islands and hybrid swimming platforms integrate constructed wetlands, phytoremediation processes, and oxygenating plant communities that actively reduce nutrient loads and increase dissolved oxygen. Along the banks, vegetated “green sponges” slow, infiltrate, and filter urban runoff, while diversion channels route contaminated flows toward treatment zones equipped with modular floating wetlands.

Beyond hydrological and ecological performance, A Grand Swim rebuilds a culture of public stewardship through real‑time water‑quality monitoring, interpretive infrastructure, and inclusive access points aligned with Blue Flag principles. By making swimming both possible and visible, the project reframes the river as a shared civic resource—one that restores habitat, improves resilience, and strengthens community connection to the Grand.
